Many countries in the world are rich with fabulous nature, inspiring history and culture and a lot of other things that deserve to be seen. However, some of those countries are going through political changes, civil wars, experiencing terrorist attacks, are exposed to some other types of violence or some circumstances pose health threats for both inhabitants and tourists. Because of this, you should think twice before deciding to visit some of these destinations, or at least take all the necessary precautionary measures. Here are some of the world’s most dangerous travel destinations and the reasons why are they on the list.
Nigeria
According to a report from the World Economic Forum, Nigeria is one of the least safe countries to visit. In the report this explained by the fact that Nigeria is plagued by terrorism and violence. In fact, the whole northern part of the country and some parts on the south are off-limits, because of the high threat from terrorism. The saddest thing is that one of the most amazing sites in Nigeria, the Yankari National Park lies within the off-limits area.
Zimbabwe
In an ideal world, Zimbabwe would be the perfect tourist destination, for its spectacular parks, World Heritage listed sites and one of the most astonishing natural wonders of the world – Victoria Falls. Still, this is not an ideal world and travelers should be aware of potential dangers, such as yellow fever. According to the News from The Good Nation Zimbabwe is a country with limited medical resources, where the children, especially, are still in great risk of getting various diseases, HIV/AIDS among them.
Colombia
Colombia is the second country, besides Nigeria, labeled as dangerous destination by World Economic Forum report. If you disregard its potential hazards, you will see that it is also one of the most fascinating destinations in the world. Starting with the excellently preserved old city of Cartagena, through Andean summits, enigmatic Amazon jungle all the way to unspoiled Caribbean coast, it is the example of a dream land. Although security has improved significantly in the last few years, you should still be alerted because of the criminal organizations which are kidnapping tourists.
Guinea
Guinea is a country blessed with stunning landscapes, from the Sahelian lands to mountain plateau Fouta Djalon. Unfortunately, it is a country affected by various health threats, most serious of them being Ebola. Some other hazards are malaria, yellow fever, typhoid, rabies, etc. Many of them will require emergency care. If you have decided to visit Guinea despite of these threats, you must be well-informed, vaccinated and obtain a health insurance that covers the costs of treating abroad.
Syria
Before the conflict between the rebels and the Assad regime, Syria was one of the safest countries in the Middle East. It is the land of spectacular historical sites and its capital is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the planet. Still, today, it is one of the most dangerous countries on the world, and the traveler who wishes to see some of Syria’s treasures will have to wait for some happier times.
The world is a dangerous place, and some parts are more dangerous than others. It is sad when those parts are some of the most fascinating tourist destinations in the world. Still, there is hope that one day, and with enough caution, we will be able to see them all.
